Texas On Pace For Record Firearm Background Checks

Texas is on pace for a record-breaking year for firearm background checks, according to new data on U.S. firearms sales compiled by the FBI.

National Instant Criminal Background Check System data, which the FBI uses to screen prospective gun buyers throughout the country, showed Texas has seen 1,364,051 background checks initiated through the system this year.

Those include: 213,969 in July; 227,232 in June; 179,192 in May; 197,343 in April; and 274,211 in March, when they COVID-19 pandemic arrived in the state.

Through all of 2019 and the first two months of 2020, the highest monthly number Texas recorded was 166,241, though no other month in that time frame saw more than 150,000 checks initiated.

The figures only show how many background checks have been conducted, not the number of firearms sold. Screening is required for anyone who purchases a firearm through a federally licensed dealer.

Since 2010, Texas’ lowest annual total for background checks was 968,071 in 2010, and its highest total was 1,721,726 in 2016. With five months remaining, even if the state were to see record-low background check requests the rest of the year, 2020 could still top all previous years.

Only two states have seen more background checks than Texas this year. Illinois ranks first with 4,592,449, and Kentucky comes in second with 2,289,080.

Come on Texas! We gotta be sure to beat Kentucky and Illinois!!!
