A firearm is a gun that is portable and can inflict damage by expanding the gases in this device. It is a requirement by law that you have a safe and a secure place to store your firearms at home. All ammunition and firearms at your home should be stored separately away from the reach of children, out of sight and also in a secure room or rack. How do you ensure you keep your gun safely at home? This guide will give you more details.

Gun Safety

Keeping your guns safe is very important because it ensures nobody is hurt by them or nobody plays around with them thus preventing damages. Below are reasons why firearms should be stored safely.

Ensure the Muzzle is always pointing in a Safe Direction

One of the basic rules regarding safety is that when handling a gun, do not point it towards anything that you have no intention of shooting. This is very important when you want to load or unload your gun, even in an occasion of accidental discharge, no accidents are likely to occur as long as your muzzle is pointing in the safe direction.

If you do not have the intention of shooting, it is not advisable to point your firearm at anything. You should always follow this rule when you are loading or unloading a gun. There is no injury which is bound to happen if the gun accidentally goes off as long as the muzzle is not pointed at anything it can destroy.

This direction should be one that a bullet cannot strike or even penetrate through an obstacle because of this a possibility. Knowing where your muzzle points always is an important aspect all the time because it ensures you don’t harm yourself to in case you trip because you should be in a position to control the muzzle all the time.

You should unload your firearms when not in use

The only time your firearm should be loaded is when you need to shoot, hunting or during sporting. If your firearm is not in use it should be stored safely and separately. You should be very cautious with places that you are storing your firearms. You should prevent unauthorized personnel and children from accessing them.

Firearms should always be unloaded when you are done. Loaded guns should not be kept in your car, home or camp and thus the importance of unloading after shooting.

You should never trust assumptions that guns are unloaded for your own safety and the rest and hence you should always check it for yourself. Action should be opened immediately when you are handling or handing a firearm to a person.

You should always be Sure of Your Target and what’s beyond it

When it’s time to shoot you always should be sure of what you are shooting and what is beyond. This will prevent the bullet from injuring anyone or anything beyond that target. You can never call your shot back and that’s why certainty is needed because there is nothing that is so important in that you can shoot before taking time to ensure that’s it’s the right target.

Another thing that you need to think about is how far the bullet will go just in case it misses your target. If you are shooting without knowing what is beyond your target, then this will raise safety concerns.

Only the correct ammunition should be used

You should assume serious responsibility when using a firearm and ensure that you have the correct ammunition with you. Using the wrong ammunition for your gun can result in destroying the gun but also causing personal injury to yourself. It only requires you to load a gun with the wrong ammunition f different caliber and your gun is done for.

Match the specifications of your gun with the correct ammunition to ensure safety and long-term use of your gun. If you are not sure of what type of ammunition you should use, check for the manual of the gun to direct you.

Manufacturer’s test and load guns depending on the standards of specific gun types and ammunition. This means that there should be no alteration of ammunition of any kind. Loading ammunition that is not designed from the specific gun factories may lead to severe damage of the gun and personal injury. You should never use the wrong type of ammunition for your gun.

Wear Protection for Your Eyes Only

For safety purposes, a shooter should always wear protective wear for the eyes and ears. When you are exposed to the noise produced during shooting, it can damage your hearing easily. Glasses should be worn to protect the eyes from target chips, falling shots, and dust that may hinder your visual capability. These protectors for your eyes and ears are important since they help you enjoy shooting fun anywhere you like.

Final Words

Target shooting and hunting are among the most favorable sports among many a people. Having a gun with you whether on your person or at home should be more than an ownership but responsibility. It is imperative that you have to know how to use, handle at all time and ensure safe storage of your gun. You should never use a gun if you do not fully understand how to use it and ensure safety.

Most of the comments were reasonable. I NEVER unload my weapon unless it is going in the safe to be traded out for another. Why have the things if they are not ready to use immediately?
