Remember The Alamo And Don’t Forget Your Gun

Remember the Alamo and don’t forget your gun. Hundreds of protesters are planning on bringing their firearms to San Antonio this Saturday in what could end up being the largest armed invasion of the famed mission since the legendary battle there back in 1836.

The “Come and Take It San Antonio – Line in the Sand” event is sponsored by several different gun rights groups including DontComply.com and Gun Rights Across America.

Organizers are encouraging people to converge on the Alamo armed with rifles, shotguns, and handguns in order to send “a strong message to [San Antonio Police] Chief McManus that we have a right to bear arms and it will NOT be infringed,” according to the group’s Facebook page. “We are drawing a line in the sand on the historic land of the Alamo.”

A flier for the event pledges that it “will be a family friendly event and voluntary chamber checks will be done to ensure safety.”

In a New York Times article, Chief McManus said of Saturday’s rally that he is “expecting it to be a peaceful gathering and within the limits of the law.”

So far, more than 500 people have pledged to show up on the Facebook page. That dwarfs the estimated 189 Texans who fought and died there in 1836.

Several political candidates are also scheduled to address the crowd. The list includes Texas Land Commissioner and Republican candidate for lieutenant governor Jerry Patterson, a strong supporter of gun rights who made a name for himself as a state senator for packing a pistol in his boot in the Capitol building. In his four-way race for the Republican nomination, Patterson has proudly touted his record as the author of the state’s concealed handgun law.
