House Bill 1533, The Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act

Texas State Rep. Jeff Leach has taken a substantial step in the fight to protect our Second Amendment rights and to encourage lawful gun ownership, by filing House Bill 1533, The Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act.

This legislation establishes Texas Independence Day (March 2) as a tax-free holiday, exempting individuals’ purchase of firearms and hunting supplies in the State of Texas from sales taxes.

Under this legislation, the following items will be eligible for tax exemption on Texas Independence Day:
• Shotguns, rifles, pistols, revolvers, and other handguns
• Gun cleaning supplies, gun cases, gun safes, and optics
• Ammunition
• Archery equipment
• Hunting stands, blinds and decoys

Leach stated, “Texas must take the lead in the fight against the federal government’s attempts to infringe on our Second Amendment Rights. The Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act encourages and incentivizes lawful gun ownership by allowing law abiding citizens, hunters, and sportsmen the opportunity to save money on firearm and hunting equipment, benefitting Texas taxpayers and small business owners and spurring economic growth. As we fight against the federal government’s overreach, there is no more appropriate day to instate this tax-free holiday than on Texas Independence Day.”
House Bill 1533 is endorsed and strongly supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA). Tara Mica, State Liaison for the NRA Institute for Legislative Action stated, “Rep. Leach’s House Bill 1533 supports lawful gun ownership and encourages Texas sportsmen to spend their money here at home. While bolstering our Texas economy, this common-sense legislation goes a long way toward promoting our Second Amendment freedoms.”

Joint Authors of the bill include Rep. Phil King, Rep. Dan Flynn, Rep. and Speaker Pro Tem Dennis Bonnen and Rep. Jonathan Stickland.

King stated, “What a better way to express Texas’s stand for constitutional principles than to recognize Texas Independence Day as a tax free holiday for the very tools of self-defense the Constitution guarantees to us.”

Bonnen stated, “Given that our federal government is unrelenting in their goal to strip our constitutional right to bear arms, I am honored to take a stand with my colleague, Representative Leach, towards the passage of this legislation to remind federal elected leaders and taxpaying citizens that our Second Amendment rights are fully recognized and supported in the great State of Texas.”
