Replica Grenade Sparks False Alarm

The Austin Police Department Bomb Squad responded to a call about a grenade in North Austin Thursday that turned out to be nothing.

The call came in after noon about the grenade — which turned out to be a replica — in Arroyo Seco and Payne Avenue, where residents within a mile of the scene were asked to stay inside via the reverse 911 system.

The grenade call turned out to be nothing more than an empty shell with a dead fuse, and another reverse 911 call went out to let residents know there was no grenade.

I bought one of those at an air show some 20 years ago as a kid. Shh, don’t tell the police, but it’s in my attic right now. I’d hate to cause a scare and lock down a 1 mile area or anything…. My word.
