APD Brings Back ‘Guns for Groceries’ Program

I said it last time, and I’ll say it again. Stupid idea. David in the comments makes a good point.

Austin police say their “Guns for Groceries” program was so successful last year, they decided to bring it back.

The next buy back program will be Saturday, Feb. 26 at Oak Meadow Baptist Church in South Austin. The church is located in the 6900 block of South I-35.

Last year APD collected nearly 350 guns.

They consider that an overwhelming response.

The initiative allows gun owners to turn in any gun, no questions asked.

They give $10 for replica or BB guns, $100 for handguns and rifles and $200 for assault rifles.

There were so many who exchanged their guns for gift cards last time, APD and The Greater Crime Commission ran out of money early.
