New Texas Rep’s Bill Would Allow CCL Carry on Campus

A new Texas state lawmaker, Rep.-elect David Simpson of Longview, filed a bill this week that would allow college students with CCLs to bring their guns on campus.

House Bill 86, similar to legislation filed in the previous session that failed to make it through the House, would say that any university or college in Texas could not stop “license holders from carrying handguns on the campus.”

Simpson said he wants to file a substitute to his bill to allow private universities and colleges to opt out of the campus-carry law.

However, in the bill students would not be able to store handguns in their dorm rooms. Schools would not be held liable for any damages caused by the guns.

If it passes, the law would go into effect Sept. 1, 2011.
